Best hash ever.  That sums up my thoughts on Puritan & Company.  Actually, wait, there’s a lot more to say!

A few weeks ago I joined the Boston Brunch Bloggers for a brunch at Puritan & Company.  We started with two plates of house-made pastries – Dulce de Leche and Coconut Danish, Banana Bread, Boston Cream Donut, Chocolate-Cherry-Almond Blondie, Preserved Lemon Corn Muffin, Ham and Cheese Pinwheel and a Cashew Sticky Bun.  I tried a few, and while the Boston Cream Donut was amazing, my favorite was the Dulce de Leche and Coconut Danish.  It was gooey, sweet and decadent.

Puritan & Company offers a small brunch menu.  In addition to pastries and the sticky bun, diners can order a Yogurt and Fruit Plate; a Croissant Breakfast Sandwich with bacon, eggs and cheddar; a Coppa Ham Sandwich with pickles, mustard, mornay sauce and potatoes; Wagyu Steak & Eggs with Hollandaise sauce, potatoes and toast; a Mushroom Quiche with spinach, cheddar and maitake mushrooms, Sourdough Griddle Cakes served with honey butter, preserves and nuts and a Broccoli and Cheddar scramble with baby greens, cheddar and toast. And the hash (which we’ll get to later).

Sides include Farm Eggs, Applewood Bacon, Breakfast Sausage, Roasted Potatoes and toast.

First we started with a Sunday cocktail.  Puritan & Company offers a Mimosa, a Bloody Mary and a Cape Cod Shrub, made of cranberry juice, vodka, vinegar and soda.  I opted for the Bloody Mary, which was good, but didn’t look as exciting as the shrub did.

But the Bloody Mary did go well with the hash.  As I learned when Chef Will Gilson (@wdgilson) came out to the table, Puritan & Company cures its corned beef in house, which makes for a better product.  The hash was served in a cast iron skillet and topped with two farm-fresh eggs.  It’s served with an Herbed Crème Fraiche, which, I have to admit, I didn’t really “get” its connection to the hash.  The hash itself had a nice kick to it, and was simply scrumptious.  The eggs were cooked perfectly, with nice runny yolks in the center.

I really liked the look and feel of Puritan & Company.  It felt like we were sitting at a large farm table, dining with and amongst friends.  I think the unique old-stove-as-hostess stand added to the farm kitchen feel of the restaurant.

Traditionally brunch is an afterthought at restaurants.  Clearly, that’s not the case with Puritan & Company.  Everything looked fabulous, used fresh ingredients, and showed a lot of creativity.  I can’t wait to get back to Puritan & Company to try more of Gilson’s farm-to-table dishes.
